Engagement and outreach

Our CDT students have been participating in a range of public engagement and outreach activities to connect with the wider community, bring our research to the public and spark inspiration and curiosity.
Examples activities:
Glastonbury outreach event
SusHy CDT researchers (Will Bowling, Una O'Hara, Cheryl Duke, Yassin Ziar, Paddy Powell, Antonia Dase, Aryamman Sanyal, Samir Soares, Zak Waite, Adedayo Dada and Amy Liscoe) have had a hydrogen outreach stall every year at the Science Futures Field at Glastonbury Festival since 2023, engaging with several thousands of members of public of all ages and background through their interactive and educating hydrogen activities and demonstrations.
Green Man outreach event
Our researchers (Una O'Hara, Paddy Powell, Niko Hilmi and Emily Blackett) also ran a hydrogen stall as part of Einstein’s Garden at Green Man Festival in 2024, interacting with more public members, share their passion for hydrogen, showcasing the recent updates on hydrogen research and engaging the public with the future of clean energy.
Science in the Park
Amelia-Rose Edgley participated in the Science in the Park event that aims to make science accessible, fun, and interactive by bringing the universities' world-leading research to the public through engaging, family-friendly activities.
Pint of Science
SusHy CDT has been supporting the Pint of Science Festival, which brings researchers and members of the public together to be curious and chat about research. Our students (Cheryl Duke, Esther Mgbemeje, Mossen Randeree and Amy Liscoe) have participated in this event including running a hydrogen stall, being a panel member and talking to the public about their research. One of our students Esther Mgbemeje was the Lead Coordinator for the Pint of Science 2025 activities in Loughborough.
The Brilliant Club
Bakhtawar Ahmed has been participating in The Brillant Club programme, which is mobilising the PhD community to support students who are less advantaged to access competitive universities and succeed when they get there.
STEM outreach events
Amelia-Rose Edgley and Alexandra Brochoire participated in a STEM outreach event to encourage girls in year 9 to pursue STEM careers, with the focus on the impact of climate change, and how hydrogen may play a role in transitioning future energy.
Emily Blackett participated in a STEM outreach activity run by HyDEX programme at Loughborough University, helping year 10 students building the hydrogen model cars that are run off a hydrogen fuel cell.
Outreach at Bacon’s college
Samir Soares and Emily Blackett delivered a science outreach session with over 30 year 10and 6th form students at Bacon’s College, including talking about the energy, engaging with students about being at university and demonstrating hydrogen fuel cell toy cars.
Foxwood Academy outreach
Antonia Dase worked with Foxwood Academy, a special educational needs school in Nottingham, designing and delivering 6 weeks of chemistry lessons to students aged 11 - 13. Antonia and her peers also showcased some of the practical experiments that they had done at the Real Science in Schools Symposium as part of Nottingham Festival of Science and Curiosity.
Nottinghamshire Festival of Science and Curiosity
Amelia-Rose Edgley volunteered at the Nottinghamshire Festival of Science and Curiosity which celebrates science, technology, engineering and maths with interactive, free and fun events across Nottinghamshire and showcases an exciting world of science and curiosity that’s all around us every day.
